Canary Eclipse

Privacy policy

Last updated: 2026-05-24 · Version 1.0.0

Canary Eclipse is an informational app for observers of the partial solar eclipse on 12 August 2026 in the Canary Islands. The text below explains what data is processed and how.

What we do NOT collect

Data processed locally

The following data is processed only on your device and never leaves it:

GPS location
After you grant the system permission — used to compute local eclipse times and AR module orientation. Your position is not sent to any server.
App preferences
Selected location, language, notification settings and onboarding status — stored in the app’s local storage (AsyncStorage).
Sensor data
Compass and accelerometer — used solely to project the Sun’s position in the AR module. Never stored or transmitted.

External services

Google Places
When you search for a place outside the recommended list, the query (search text, Canary Islands geographic rectangle) is sent to Google. No user identifiers are transmitted.
MapTiler / MapLibre
Map tiles are loaded from MapTiler servers. Requests contain only the coordinates of the displayed area.

Permissions

Location
Computing local eclipse times and the distance from your selected location.
Camera
Showing the Sun’s position in the AR module. The image is neither stored nor transmitted.
Photo gallery
Saving photos taken from within the AR module.
Notifications
Local reminders about the upcoming eclipse, if enabled in settings.
Motion sensors
Operating the compass and accelerometer in the AR module.

You can revoke any of these permissions at any time in your device’s system settings.

Notifications

Eclipse reminders are local — scheduled on the device, not delivered via push servers. You can enable or disable them on the “Settings” screen.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their data.
